VQDM Interview With Vocalist Matt Mitchell for UK Band FURYON About Their "Lost Salvation"

VQDM: Hello Matt! Thank you for taking the time with everything going on to do this Interview!

Matt: Thank you Kathey for your support!

VQDM:  For someone just hearing of your band Furyon now and reading this how would you introduce them to your sound ?

Matt: It's a Hard Rock band .. Dropped tuned guitars with heavy riffs, great solos and singing melodies!

VQDM: Brief History of the band?

Matt: 2006 we released an EP call '32 hours' and went from there really.

Recorded our first album in 2010 which had Great feedback and kicked us into another gear I'd say. But we stumbled across so e in house issues also just at that time which set the band back. But still, after some successful moments and hard changes we are back in action with this 2nd album!

VQDM:  What made you choose the path you are all on now, compared to what your parents wanted you to do and what age did you know this is what I want to do?

Matt: I remember being about 7 years old and laying in bed pretending to play a concert at my school whilst my Dad played Led Zepplin downstairs. I wanted to play guitar, sing songs and drive trucks! No joke! I just gotta drive trucks too now, haha!

VQDM: Have you always been supported by friends and family or have there been those moments when someone has tried to discourage or steer you all in the wrong direction?

Matt: To be honest. Me personally, I've had both. My Mother has been good to me over the years and supported me and my girlfriends have mostly been great. When I was younger I did have some negative discouragement that did effect me. But .. I soon realised it wasn't real and just the troubles of someone projecting it onto me. That was a really tough time thinking back. But in a way it's kinda helped me now.  Jealously of what people do or love to do is a fucked up thing. There always seems to be a hater so where lurking. Hmm ..

VQDM: Do you write all the lyrics?  If so Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process or does it just happen and you find yourself grabbing something to write on?

Matt: I have written lyrics for years. Yes I write 95% of the lyrics. There has been some songs written or co written lyric wise. That's a bit of a struggle sometimes as lyrics can mean alot to one.  But, I do believe in good co writing.

VQDM: Who are your musical  influences?

Matt:  I love good songs and singers. From Ray Charles to James Taylor to Free/Bad Co. to Rod Stewart to Duran Duran to Aerosmith to Jon Mayer to Prince to ACDC to Slipknot to Alice in Chains to Alterbridge.  Have a look a that and think of the bits inbetween ... Love it.

VQDM:  The name Furyon is very unique, where did  the name come from? Did it steam from the word "Fury?"

Matt:  It's a warrior name that we thought was good to represent the band.

VQDM: Is there  anything about your personality you would change?  If so, what would that be and why?

Matt: Wow! I would like to say 'give a shit a little less' because it can really be a pain in ones life to constantly worry or feel anxious. But, that has also brought some wild and beautiful things into my life. Tough question for me to answer.

VQDM: Is there a message you ever want to give to your fans with your lyrics?

Matt: I would like to say yes. But they're not really. Again, it would be nice to say something like ' have hope and be strong' etc but, A lot of the lyrics are outlets and stories of real life. But, people take songs and make them their own right? That's what songs do! They become everyone's song as soon as they're released and in people's lives. What the song might mean to me could mean something else to the listener, and I'll give then that. That's cool. The songs are everyone's open to interpretation when out there.

VQDM: What has been your biggest challenge as a band?

Matt: Losing members. It can be far more heartbreaking than people think when you take what you do seriously. Not yourself seriously, one must have fun. But take what you 'do' seriously.

VQDM:  What expectations do you have for yourself when you’re creating music?

Matt: To get it out sounding and expressing it as good as I possibly can.

VQDM: Where did the inspiration to your second album "Lost Salvation ' come from?

Matt: Journey. Changes. Heartbreak. Death and being Re born. These are all the main inspirations.

VQDM:  Can you talk about the highs and lows you experienced during the creation of the album "Lost Salvation?"

Matt: Well ... Not so many lows. The writing was good and positive to be honest.

VQDM:  While working on tracks, are you ever surprised at how good they become? What tracks surprised you most on this album "Lost Salvation"?

Matt:  Some tracks literally came like blessings. That sounds crazy to some but sometimes it works so well and chords and melodies meet lyrics almost like it was meant to be. We had some of those moments writing this record. Others... Well you are stuck on a line for days... Haha. And maybe, it still doesn't seem quite right. Until a couple years later when it's just what you know. Maybe that's what's classed as 'a filler' on an album.

VQDM: Where was  the album " Lost Salvation"recorded?

Matt: Recorded, mixed & mastered at Black Dog Studios, Atlanta GA, US with addition tracking in UK.

VQDM: Is there any kind of genre of music any of you would like to compose later in life ?

Matt: I think some classical maybe for guitarists. Definitely some Jazz or World music. Me, I love stripping it back. Piano/acoustic.

VQDM: Hobbies and or professions outside of Furyon?

Matt: Of course not, it's about Furyon.

VQDM: What is the worst onstage mishap you have experienced?

Matt:  I wouldn't want to say haha. Maybe being so sick that you shouldn't be there in the first place so the whole experience for everyone involved is more like The Walking Dead.

VQDM: What advice would you give to fellow bands?

Matt:Work hard. Be honest.

VQDM:  Name your five favorite top bands.

Matt:  I couldn't possibly. I would put 5 down and then change them and then change them again. Let's say Aerosmith for today! 5 of them.

VQDM: If you hadn't been born in this century, when and where would you of like to have lived?

Matt:  Oooh ... That's a tough one. You say century but that's harsh as times were harsh. Maybe in a simple time where life was very basic but beautiful. But, for not so long ago and in the last 100 years I think maybe The 50's!

VQDM: Do you have the "prankster" of the band?

Matt: Possibly all of us.

VQDM: Little fun here! If you could be a superhero, who would you be or what superpowers would you like to have?

Matt: Superman wins everything right? Batman is quite cool. Gets a cool house and lots of gadgets and cats etc. Wears black a lot.

VQDM: Describe  Furyon  in 3 words?

Matt: Hard edged, Melodious, Intense

VQDM:  What can we look for in the future from Furyon?

Matt: Another album is in planning and we are tour UK in March.

VQDM: Any Shout outs to anyone?

Matt: Thanks to all the people that support Furyon. Thanks for keeping it alive and kicking. Bless you all. Enjoy 'Lost Salvation' and make it yours.
