Voodoo Queen Digital Magazine Interview with with Maximus front man " Blackie"

VQDM-For someone just hearing of your band now and reading this how would you introduce them to your sound ?

"Hey bob I stacked up some wood next to the garage. Let's get drunk and light it on fire."

"The wood or the garage? "

"Does it fucking matter?"

Blackie: It's kinda like that.

VQDM: Where are you all from and how long have you known each other?

Blackie: Saint Louis originally but currently in western Kansas an hour from Colorado I've known Brandon for about 2 years now, Steve about 6, Mike a year, and recently my cousin has joined the lineup as a fifth member. Sean for sometime now Brandon lives in eastern IowaSteve lives in a suitcase Mike lives in WichitaAnd Sean lives in Saint Charles Mo.

VQDM: How did the name Maximus come to be?

Blackie: When I put this together I wanted something reminiscent of the big show off bands of the eighties. Big sound,Big show (budget allowing), Big guitars, big vocals, Big attitude Kind of like Steele panther meets the ego of Kanye.

The name had to represent that. Maximus is the largest of the large and it's a generals name and as we all know the music biz is a huge fight every day just to get anywhere so I thought Maximus would serve us well to let people know we were fighters.

VQDM: What made any of you choose the path you are all on now, compared to what your parents wanted you to do and has there always been that support from family?

Blackie: I actually grew up in a very musical family dating back generations. I don't necessarily think I had any other path to take. I was in the usaf for nearly a decade and even managed to end up playing music while in.

VQDM: Is there a message you ever want to give to your fans with your lyrics?

Blackie: Everything I write is from real world direct experiences. Nothing fake. What you're seeing is a lifetime of lessons I learned the hard way and I would hope listeners learn from my mistakes.

VQDM-What is the worst onstage mishap you have experienced?

Blackie: Nearly fell ten feet from an ego box off the front of a stage down between the stage front and crowd bar. Tripped jumping up on the ego box and went head first forward. I caught the bar with one hand while holding my guitar with the other. Somehow managed to climb back up just in time to solo the song and most of the crowd never even realized what I'd done. There was another time I chipped a tooth onstage .That sucked equally.

VQDM: What do you find to be the biggest challenge in the creative process?

Blackie: Getting together as a band

VQDM: Where do you all go when your on stage, do you have a different mind set?

Blackie: I always try and separate myself from the crowd and the day fifteen minutes prior to stage time.

VQDM: what inspires any of you when you go to write or jam?

Blackie:I take my inspiration from things I witness in day to day life whether it be a personal experience or things I see on the news that affect me

VQDM: Who are your hero's, I'm not just referring to musicians but anyone in general?

Blackie: first and foremost my father. The man died and came back.

He's the hardest working individual I've ever met in my life. He's a machine that simply won't give up and for that reason I don't have the right to either. My wife is also a hero of mine. She's the strongest most compassionate person I know. Supports my dream like no one I've ever met. If it wasn't for her I'd have given up music years ago.

VQDM: What would I find on your ipod?

Blackie: Porn, take out, garage band Oh you said iPod lmao........ Sevendust, Rascal Flats, Seether, All Man Brothers, Avril Lavigne a ton of music that doesn't always fit.

VQDM:  If you hadn't been born in this century, when and where would you of like to have lived?

Blackie: Late sixties early seventies as a teen in either California or England Or Ancient Greece.

VQDM: If you were able to sit under the table and listen to any two people speak, who would it be?

Blackie: God and the devil

VQDM: Hobbies and or professions outside of Maximus?

Blackie: Motorcycles, drag racing, and I do sales as a profession

VQDM: If you kids wanted to do this profession, how would your reaction be?

Blackie: I'd be ecstatic but truthful about all of the cons as well as the pros.

VQDM: Describe  Maximus in 3 words?

Blackie: I am Spartacus
